Pikuach nefesh is really important during the summer! I know two young girls who just died because they drowned when swimming unsupervised. It seems that every year children drown during the summer. Pikuach nefesh must be more emphasized, and the frum community must be more careful to supervise children.
For example, pools should be locked up when there is no one there. They should only allow children to use the pool when there is a lifeguard on duty. Children should be taught how to swim from a young age. They should also be given floats or life preservers when going in water that they cannot stand in.

If the girls were found that way then we shouldn't assuem they were at fault. It sounds farfetched, but we must dan them lkaf zechus. We should still use it as a warning.

The freaky thing is that their next door neighbor also died. He choked while in the hospital. Both of them weren't home when they died - but they both are neighbors in Crown Heights.

All children should have swimming lessons starting from age 3-4 depending on their development and continue untill they are at least 10-12. By law all pools even private home pools are required to be surrounded by a fence and proper emergency device needs to be availble. Everyone can learn how to swim and as much money as needed should be used for this good cause. Also swimming with clothes on including long tee shirts are a big danger to one's safety. Perhaps a body fitting shirt is ok but should be avoided if possible.
