That is a very dangerous assessment and can be very detrimental to think about. While I do believe that sometimes a gadol is taken if we don't deserve him in our generation or as a kaporah for us, I don't think that typically someone else is taken to punish us... We don't know the why's in this world, but we just have to do our best to move forward and to the best we can with the lives that we live. As long as we're still living, we still have opportunity for growth and improvement. Instead of looking and questioning why someone else is not here, we have to focus on why we are here and how we can maximize our time in this world.

It could be what you're thinking of is that HKB"H is a dayan emes. Before Hashem allows anything to happen he takes into consideration everyone from close relatives to someone across the world who will hear the news who may be affected by it. Whereas the death may or may not be a punishment for the family, the pain and suffering that they will be caused is all taken into consideration.
Also, not that it's easy to see (and I say that from personal experience) but I just want to point out that death is not always a punishment. The neshama was allotted a certain amount of time and either fulfilled its tafkid or was taken for myriads of other reasons. Is it possible that one of them is as a punishment? Yes, but I don't think would necessarily be the main one.

even when we dont understand things, even when it seems unjust, we need to realize that gd does not do bad. EVERYTHING has a reason- even the most horrible, tragic thing. maybe that child was a soul who returned to earth to finish his job, and completed his mission. we cant understand how gd works, but we gotta trust Him. my teacher in 9th grade gave us this article once. in short, it talked about a piece of cloth or carpet or something. anways, the carpet was all mest up- like there were strings flying all over and little snippets and it looked rly ugly. but that was the bottom of the carpet. on top, the part that is displayed, was a beautiful piece. in this world, we only see the bottom of the carpet, the messed up, ugly, discombobul8d part. but on top, its beautiful. on top, it makes sense. gd has a plan, we just dont see it in this world. but its there.

Just beacuase someone is taken from this world, it doesn't mean it's a punishment. Remember that this world is only a preparation for the world to come, and perhaps that child was able to achieve, in a very short amount of time, all that it needed to do in this world. It's hard on us, the survivors to see and experience the pain of losing a loved one, particularly a young child, but as I said before, we don't know G-d's calculations and we can't understand why things happen. Our job is to learn any lessons we can, and do our best to move on and be the best people we can be. While this doesn't ease the pain or make the difficulty any easier, focusing on the "why"s will usually just be even more difficult and painful.

it can be a punishment for a person but thats not the reson 4 the death cuz when gd takes someones life he takes the suffering of each person into consideration
but dont you dare blame yourself for the death thats a tactic of the yezer hora that will make you completly depressed even if you might have needed punishmen (lets sayvparents of kid) gd took their life bec there time was up or bec they needed punishment and their death is not your fault
