I feel very awkward anytime someone says something nice about me and I never feel like like just totally good inside and I don't know why.

Dont think anyone here can diagnose you online, maybe you should see someone? If you do make sure its someone that has a reputation for knowing what they are doing.
And just because you cant take a compliment doesnt mean low self esteem.

Sounds like you are just naturally modest and don't like being praised in public! (Unless you feel that you don't deserve the praise because you're unworthy of out for that.) Baishanus (shyness/shame) is a great midah to have (except in learning, as said in Pirkei Avos); it's one of the identifying characteristics of a Jew. Good for you if you have it!

I don't think you have low self esteem, you are just modest! This is a good thing, but you need to know how to take a compliment. Even if you do feel embarrassed, thank the person who complimented you and try compliment back. I admire you for having such modesty!! :)

Only YOU can really know whether or not you have low self-esteem! Feeling uncomfortable about compliments doesn't necessarily mean that you do have LSE -- you might be feeling self-conscious, which is not unusual. If you don't like hearing compliments about yourself, good for you -- you're not egotistical or egoistical and should only be happy about that! Low self-esteem would be more where one feels that one is unworthy of anything and a complete failure. If you feel that you don't deserve to receive anything complimentary, that's when you might worry.
