are you allowed to listen to an english song but with hebrew words that are totallly appropriate?
brachos Posted - 21 March 2010 21:14
Do you mean a non-Jewish song that someone put Hebrew words to?

Personally, I do not think that counts as Jewish music at all. It's the same tune and secular culture that you're listening to.

Also, there is something worse about taking Hebrew words - probably from davening or tanach - and putting them to this tune. The tune is probably not so "kosher", and the original lyrics might not have been either.

mop-u have a good point, and ya, you could say youre elevating the music... but forget the words for a minute. the music itself has an extremely powerful affect on our neshamos. i honestly doubt that the people who composed these songs had the holiest of kavanos when they composed them. that's not to say all nj music is bad-its not!!!!!!! there are some ok pieces out there, adn there are plenty of tunes that are totally fine, but there are certain tunes that when you hear the original words, it makes you want to cringe hearing the words of Dovid Hamelech sung to such things... idk if i'm being so clear :(
mop Posted - 17 January 2011 23:43
but tzumisht what if u dont know the original song or words?
Rabos Machashovos Posted - 11 February 2011 3:45
BS"D

The tune is still what your neshama hears. As Baruch Levine's "Power of a Niggun" song goes, it's the language of your soul. Neshamos communicate through song, so the tune would impact the neshama; the words would probably impact the mind.

not knowing makes it easier to listen to and to sing the jewish words to it, but the kavanos that the original singer had are still a part of the tune. Am i being clear, or not really? :)
mop Posted - 03 March 2011 1:13
but some not jewish tunes can sound jewish if there are pure words, so?
LL3 Posted - 16 March 2011 1:33
i ttly always used to agree that even if u dont know the song if thr tunes nj its bad 4u. but now i found out most jewish songs have nj tunes. so like why is it ok to listen to yeshivah boys choir we turn to you? that comes from a goyish tune. and so do majority of other jewish songs.
taon Posted - 25 March 2011 1:07
maybe its okay maybe not. but its definitely better
tzumisht Posted - 25 March 2011 1:07
K, guess i'm not being so clear. i mean that even though the song may sound pure, the intentions may not have been. but that's not to say that all the kavanos behind every non-jewish tune were bad. and there are many tunes that are totally okay. sorry, now i know i'm not being clear, but i'm having a hard time writing this-so much easier to explain in person sorry! :0)
