I heard somewhere that it's forbidden to daven barefoot. Is this true?

are socks enough, or do I need to be wearing shoes?
bananahannah23 Posted - 22 September 2009 13:57
Thanks. Could you give me the reason? I'm just wondering.
MODERATOR Posted - 23 September 2009 21:17

You are supposed to daven dressed at least as you would be when standing before a king or other important person. Just socks aren't enough.

It's not respectful to daven improperly dressed.

Is it ok to daven in crocs?
(Assuming that there are socks on underneath.)
bananahannah23 Posted - 30 September 2009 19:20
Thanks so much!!
bored613 Posted - 30 September 2009 19:20
so then how do we justify davening dressed in weekday clothes?
someone going to a king would prob dress in their fanciest clothes, which isn't what we're wearing every time we daven

It depends. If they have opened backs then no, if they are closed on all sides, or enough to resemble normal shoes, it's okay.

That's why some people do wear suits, or at least jackets, during davening. it's a good thing to do, but we aren't obligated to.

do you have to wear shoes - or can you wear slippers?
jewishgirl1 Posted - 13 October 2009 15:39
What about krias shema al hamitah? Do you still have to be properly dressed? After hamapil you aren't supposed to do anything, so it does help to change after saying shema.
bored613 Posted - 13 October 2009 15:39
so my brothers/father all wear hats and jackets for davening
but what about for girls?
taon Posted - 21 October 2009 21:37
E6M1E3S, I learnt as long as they have backs (as opposed to ones with completely open heels) it's okay, but you should wear socks.

May the Geulah have come before this post goes up.

girls aren't obligated to wear something in particular, but I guess you can dress nicely to show kavod
