Belios are not always able to travel from one object to another upon contact. They do so only under certain "favorable"
1) The presence of an outside "catalyst" is necessary to
facilitate the transference of the Belios. The most common -
though not the only - catalyst for Belios, is heat. Without a
catalyst, Belios can not be transfered from one object to
2) Not all substances "conduct" Belios. Some substances are
incapable of absorbing Belios. Others absorb (Boleah) Belios,
but do not release (Polet) them. Obviously, an item incapable of
accepting any Belios can never become "Milchig" or "Fleishig,"
”but will remain Pareve no matter what you do with it!
3) Some substances are able to accept and/or transfer Belios
in a limited capacity only. They can transfer Belios only into
certain materials, and can absorb them from certain materials
only. Example: Metal absorbs Belios from hot food upon contact,
but not from another piece of metal. The proper combination of
conductors creates a "circut" that is needed for the transference
of the Belios.
4) Belios get "worn out" if they travel too much. If meat
is cooked in a pot, Belios of meat travel from the meat into the
pot. Even when the meat is removed and the pot cleaned, those
meat Belios remain in the walls of the pot, so that if milk, for
instance, is subsequently cooked in that same pot, it will absorb
those Belios and become Treif.
However, Belios get quite worn out wandering all over the
world like that from the meat to the pot and then from the pot
to the milk. "Worn out" Belios are not as potent as fresh ones.
These "half dead" Belios retain their Fleishig identity in some
respects but not all.
For instance: If you cook something Pareve, such as water or
vegetables, in a Fleishig pot, that water (or those vegetables)
becomes only "half" Fleishig. You may not cook the vegetables (or
water) with milk, but if you did, the milk remains kosher. This
is due to the rule of "Nat bar Nat."
"Nat" is an abbreviation for "Nosen Taam," or "Giver of
Taste," "taste" meaning Belios, a property of which is the taste
of its mother source. Meat is cooked in a pot. The pot is imbibed
with meat Belios. As such, it is considered a "Nosen Taam," a
"Giver of Meat Taste (Belios)," meaning that it will discharge
meat Belios into anything subsequently cooked in it.
If you do subsequently cook something in that pot, it will
absorb those same Belios, but by that time they will have been
somewhat weakened from "traveling." An item that absorbs such
Belios is called a "Nat bar Nat," meaning "Second Generation
Giver of Taste."
The pot absorbed Belios from the meat. That pot is now
qualified as a "Giver of Meat Belios, first generation" -- it's
Belios were absorbed first hand from meat. If vegetables are
cooked in that pot, they will absorb Belios second-hand -- from
the pot who got them from the meat. Second hand Belios are worn
out and lose their full potency.
