I heard the problem wasnt in kashrus, just that chewing and not really eating is considered improper (watch someone do it).

Yah. The reason is the base and the softeners are not always kosher. However, these parts, even is swallowed, are not digested by the body. I know R' Abadi holds this way but not too many hold by him. There must be others because I see Ashkenazim chewing it all the time. (I don't know many Ashkenazi poskim.)

just to clarify- Rav Abadi does NOT hold that it is okay to chew not kosher gum! He holds that certain brands of gum that does not carry a hechsher is kosher. Very contraversial psak i might add...

snelling- thank you for the clarification. its important for ppl understand that , i know many many ppl who make that mistake and its another example of something ppl distort from r abadi.

people always distort psakim..when they want to be maikel they'll find a way, it's how the yatzer hora works.

matisyohu- this is not a case of distorting a psak lkula, the psak exists no question about it, its the reasoning behind the psak that is distorted.
Matisyohu28 Posted - 19 May 2008 23:50
I meant the mythical psak that all trief gum is ok, which does not exist - the only(controversial) psak that exists uis that certain brands of gum are kosher that everyone else holds are treif.
